The Vasanoja family played a significant role in the early development of Palmer, Alaska, as part of the 1935 Matanuska Colony project. Originally from Minnesota, Lawrence and Helen Vasanoja, along with their five children—Dorothy, Marcella, Pearl, Maralyn, and Lawrence Jr. (Larry)—relocated to Palmer to pursue new opportunities.
Lawrence "Larry" Roland Vasanoja Jr., born in 1924, was 11 years old when the family made the journey to Alaska. He became a prominent community member, graduating from Palmer High School in 1942 and serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Larry worked at Alaska Sales and Service and managed the Palmer bulk fuel plant. He married Irene Plumley in 1945, and together they raised two children, Rollie and Cindy. Larry passed away in 2023 at the age of 99.
The Vasanoja family's experiences have been preserved through letters archived by the Palmer Museum, offering insights into the challenges and daily life of early colonists in the region.
